How Do Electronic Cigarettes Work?
Mar 17
An electronic cigarette is a small, convenient devices that provides a novel method of nicotine delivery while not producing smoke or using tobacco. These devices work through the use of a heating element that vaporizes the nicotine solution in a electronic cigarette cartridge into a gas that a user can inhale without consuming the harmful tobacco smoke of a traditional cigarette. In order to properly understand how these devices operate, it is useful to take a look at the primary components of an e cigarette. The three main components of an e-cigarette are:
* The Cartridge: a replaceable mouthpiece containing a nicotine solution
* The Atomizer: the heating element that vaporizes the nicotine solution
* The Electrical Components: the various electrical circuitry that allow the device to operate
While there are a variety of different electronic cigarettes on the market, use some form of cartridge that contains the nicotine solution that is vaporized by the device. This solution is usually is often called as e-juice or e-liquid. Depending on the amount of actual nicotine that an user desires, there are a range of cartridges available with different concentrations of nicotine, as well as several different flavors. The primary ingredient in all nicotine solutions is propylene glycol, a colorless and odorless liquid that allows the vaporized nicotine to be delivered by the device.
The atomizer is the most important component of an electronic cigarette. When the liquid solution in the cartridge is release into the atomizer, it is immediately vaporized by the atomizer’s heating element. While the atomizer on most electronic cigarettes is built into the actual device, there are some designs available in which the replaceable cartridge contains both the nicotine solution and the atomizer, and these components are called cartomizers.
Lastly, the electrical components can differ a great deal from one e-cigarette to the next depending on the design of the device. In automatic versions, the device is activated through a sensor that immediately starts the atomizer as soon as the user inhales on the devices. Manual electronic cigarettes require the user to turn on the device by pressing a small button before inhaling. Most electronic cigarettes use a LED light that indicates that the device is activated, and there are a variety of different LED light colors available to suit a user’s personal preference. Electrical cigarettes are powered by lithium-ion battery that can be recharged at home, in the car or even through the USB port on a portable computer.
